Kuzhi paniyaram for kids

There is always a way to include veggies into kids diet, It can be a hard job when the little ones are picky like mine. Oh Yeah, no matter what I give or how creative I get with food my daughter likes plain old paruppu rasam with extra dal and extra ghee :) Though it sounds delicious, It is a challenge for me to change that habit of her's. She has to learn to eat what's in her plate.

Here is one of the many such recipes that my daughter approved :) I love Kuzhi paniyaram, especially leftover idli batter that has stayed in the refrigerator and has gotten sour is perfect for this recipe.

Unlike regular kuzhi paniyarams, these are not as crispy or oil sucking food. They are rather soft and spongy. There is a recipe for every picky eater, Shredded veggies (with carrots and cabbage), sweetness of carrots with a touch of jaggery & finally green goodies with peas and spinach.

COOKING TIME - 10 - 15 mins

Sweet Of carrots

  • Idli / Dosa batter - 1 cup
  • Boiled carrot puree - 1 medium carrot
  • Jaggery - 1 tbsp

Shredded Veggies

  • Idli / dosa batter - 1 cup

  • Onion - 1 tbsp

  • cumin seeds - 1 tsp

  • Green chilli - 1 (minced)

  • Ginger - 1 tsp (minced)

  • shredded carrot - 1 tbsp

  • shredded cabbage - 1 tbsp

  • coriander / cilantro leaves

Green goodies

  • idli / dosa batter - 1 cup

  • Green puree (peas - 1/4 cup, spinach - 1/4 cup, green chilli - small)

  • salt

  • onion - 1 tbsp

  • cumin seeds - 1 tsp

  • minced ginger - 1 tsp

  • sambar powder - 1 tbsp

Heat appe pan on medium heat

Mix all the ingredients and keep it aside. Once the appe pan is hot add gingelly oil and to that add kuzhi paniyaram mixes into the holes. Wait for it to cook on one side and turnover.

Repeat the process until all of the batter is cooked

This will taste delicious on its own with no compliments.

  1. This will be soft because of the added veggie puree, use a spoon to turnover
  2. Keep an eye on the spice level. Try to nicely mince the green chilli if it is given to kids.
  3. I love adding lots of coriander leaves and use gingelly oil for extra flavor
  4. Get creative with veggies and recipes based on likings.

Enjoy and Happy cooking!
