Pachai Milagai Kuzhambhu (Green Chili Stew)

I always wanted to try having a bite of green chili with some gruel. But then I am afraid to feel the pain :) I thought i should at least give this stew a try, Something was keeping  me back from making it all these while.

Did you know Green chili's are supposed to have a lot of health benefits. It is a good source of vitamins and fiber. then seeds inside helps to control cholesterol. In earlier days people eat raw chili during winter so that the hotness will make you sweat :) Genius !! But Uhhhhhh !!! Atleast we could try this stew along with rice :)

Preparation time: 10 mins

Cooking time: 20 - 30 mins

Serves - 2

You Need:

  • Green chilies - 5 or 6
  • tamarind pulp - 1 cup from a small ping pong sized ball
  • Salt - to taste
  • Grated Jaggery - 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - few strands (Optional)
  • Fenugreek seeds- 2tsp
  • Black Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Rice flour - 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida (Hing) - generous pinch
  • Oil - 2 tbsp's

Direction:

Slit the green chilli's (Wash your hand with soap immediately), extract tamarind pulp and keep them ready.

In a tadka dry roast Fenugreek seeds until it changes its color. Just before switching off the stove add asafoetida. And using mortar and pestle or a any spice grinder make a fine powder of it.

Meanwhile in a heavy bottom pan or wok heat oil and once smoking add mustard seeds and wait for it to splutter. Then to than add curry leaves and slitted green chilli's. After sauteing it for a minute add tamarind pulp, salt and Jaggery to it and cook it until raw smell is gone. Then to that add the powdered Asafoetida and fenugreek seed powder and mix well. Finally mix rice flour in 1/4 cup and add it to the kuzhambhu (Stew) and dilute adding more water if necessary. After adding rice flour mixture bring it to boil and switch off the stove.

Adding rice flour will help the stew to get thicker. Accompanies well with white rice and Spiced and Roasted Carrot. If you want nice color to it you can add turmeric powder to it :) and do not miss to dry roast fenugreek seeds and hing. Its a must !!

Hope you like it :) Enjoy and Happy Cooking !!
