Homemade porridge mix - sathu maavu recipe

This is by far my daughter's favorite food :) She has been eating this since she was 8 months old and now she is a very active and 90 %ile 3 year old.  (Touch wood) she is not bored of this. Infact she will miss and ask for ("Koozh mamma", in her words) if she skipped this for a day :)

This might look like a lot of effort, but its totally worth it. There are various versions, but this combination is one of our favorites. My husband is 6'4" and he literally grew up drinking loads of this :)

This indian style protein shake is a healthier, easy breakfast alternative and the best part is this suitable for anyone infants, kids to adults.

INGREDIENTS

  • Boiled rice / idli rice - 1/2 cup
  • finger millet (ragi) - 1/2 cup
  • Pearl millet (kambu/bajri) - 1/2 cup
  • Whole wheat - 1/2 cup
  • Nuts - 1/3 cup
  • Tapioca - 1 tbsp

Notes

  1. Rice absorbs lot of water and increases food quantity while cooking.
  2. Also par boiled / idli rice is easily digestible especially for infants and kids.
  3. Rice can be substituted with sprouted quinoa
  4. I had bajra / kambu flour at home so I went ahead and used it
  5. Sprouted and soaking will help to use it as ready to eat.

Now to the directions :)

DIRECTION

STEP 1

Sprout the millets the day or 2 before making the powder. To make the sprouts, its simple

  1. Wash (2-3 times) to get rid of the dirt
  2. Soak (8 to 12 hours)
  3. Drain & transfer to a breathable cloth
  4. Tie and Hang
  5. After every 24 hours remove and sprinkle water.
  6. After 24 to 36 hours you can see the grains sprouted wonderfully :)

STEP 2:

On the day of making powder

  1. Wash and Soak the rice for 2 hours
  2. Drain and keep it aside

STEP 3:

Dry roast each ingredients separately on a low to medium heat.

Notes:

  1. Dry roast rice until its turns golden and puffed up
  2. Whole wheat until its popping and dancing like popcorn
  3. I used (blanched almonds, cashews and peanuts), use any nuts of your choice or skip it
  4. Be careful while roasting millets, they burn quick.
  5. Try to avoid using flour. It makes the consistency sticky, (I couldn't find whole grain bajra)
  6. If you couldn't find any whole grain, You can dry roast flour and use it.

STEP 4:

Grind in flour mill or in a mixer.

Sieve and re grind. I used a small hole sieve.

STEP 5:

ENJOY :)

I use about 3 tbsp of powder for 1 to 1 1/4 cup of milk. If you want to give it to babies or kids as eating porridge consistency, microwave for 1 min and add more milk or water as needed.

On stove top, This can be added to hot milk and cook for 2 minutes.

IN IP - mix everything together and IP in a mug for 2 mins - High pressure.

Enjoy and Happy cooking :)
